Basic Instructions for Wax-Dipped Bears
Materials Needed:
Bears for Dipping
141mp or higher wax (approx. 1/4 lb. per 8" bear)
Fragrance (approx. 1 1/2 oz. per lb. of wax)
Color to match bear
Insulated rubber gloves
Tongs or needle nose pliers
-
Melt wax in a presto kitchen kettle or turkey roaster to 170-200 degrees. Add fragrance and stir well. At this time you can add dye to match darker or colored bears allowing it to blend better with the material. Any color other than white may appear looking like "dandruff" on a darker animal.
- After the wax is melted and the color and scent have been added and stirred, let wax cool until it's a bout 160 degrees before dipping. If the wax is too hot, the animal may shrink and become misshapen.
- Using a pair of tongs or needle nose pliers, briefly dip and submerse the animal in the wax until wax covers entire body of animal.
- Using the tongs hold the animal over the melter and, while wearing thick rubber gloves, squeeze out the excess wax back into your melter. This means less waste and less mess!
- Immediately use a large tooth wire comb or hair pick (or fork in a pinch) to comb or fluff the hair. Longer hair requires more fluffing. This must be done before the wax hardens.
- Next put your animal on a wire baking rack to let cool. You can pose them at this point. To completely dry, let stand about 2 hours.
- Once completely cooled you can package them in a cellophane bag and tie with a decorative ribbon. We recommend enclosing instructions for care.
Additional Comments
- Jointed bears allow for easier posing, but any sitting animal will work as well.
- The fragrance will decrease over time if the animal is kept at room temperature. To refresh the scent, heat with a blow dryer for about a minute. This needs to be done about once a month or as desired.
- Some fragrance oils can discolor white animals,
- Never put wax-dipped animals directly on wood. A dish, glass or metal, will protect the wood surface from stain by the oils in the wax.
- Keep out of the reach of children, as these animals are no longer toys.
- Wax dipped animals do not need wicks because they are not meant to burn. They are an air freshener and not a candle.
- Get creative with bows, decorations, packaging, accessories and poses. Have fun!
